Gwen Stefani, the famous singer and coach on The Voice, had to give her 10-year-old son Apollo a history lesson about her musical past. The Grammy winner revealed that she had to explain to Apollo what No Doubt was, ahead of the band’s reunion, which is set to take place at Coachella 2024 and an upcoming performance at Super Bowl LVIII in partnership with TikTok and the NFL.
No Doubt is the rock band that Gwen cofounded in 1986 with her brother Eric Stefani and John Spence, who died by suicide in 1987. The band also includes Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young, who joined later. Gwen and Tony dated for seven years, from 1987 to 1994, and their breakup inspired many of the songs on No Doubt’s album Tragic Kingdom.
The band became popular in the 1990s with hits like “Don’t Speak,” “Just a Girl,” and “Spiderwebs.” They went on an indefinite hiatus in 2015, as Gwen pursued her solo career and joined The Voice.
Gwen told People that Apollo, who was born in 2014, did not know much about her No Doubt days and asked her about Coachella, the music festival where the band is set to perform in April.
“I had to literally lay in bed with Apollo, and he’s like, ‘But mom, what is Coachella? Everyone’s saying it. What is this? It sounds like it’s a big deal,'” she said. “So we had to watch the ‘Don’t Speak’ video, and he’s like, ‘But wait, which one was your boyfriend?’ It was so weird and so funny. I literally had to tell him each band member,” she added.
Gwen said that she was “completely overwhelmed” by the warm reception No Doubt has received after announcing their reunion on Instagram and X. She said that she was nostalgic about her No Doubt days and wanted to hang out with her former bandmates. She also said that she was happy with Blake Shelton, and that there was no bad blood between her and Tony.
“I can’t believe he’s turning 10 already! It’s such a wonderful and amazing gift. It felt like a dream to me. I feel like we’ve traveled to the future and got hit by a bolt of lightning, and (No Doubt) is like, ‘We made it!’”
